Download 18 FREE Animated Textures with a Gritty Style

Add some captivating animated texture to your videos and designs with this collection of 18 FREE animated textures. Download here.

I’ve always been a fan of adding organically generated texture to to any form of digitally generated design. And that’s why, out of all of the freebies we’ve ever put out for free week, this is the one I’m probably going to end up using the most in my own work.

If you need to give your motion graphics and title design a little bit of extra visual intrigue, this versatile pack of textures is your drag-and-drop, hassle-free, time-saving solution.

To make this pack, I went around my house and found any scrap of paper or fabric that had an interesting texture to it and scanned them facing in different directions.

These textures were scanned in high resolution and then animated on twos (a new frame for every two frames on the timeline) in After Effects before being exported. That means these textures come baked in with a little bit of that frame-by-frame animated style for drag-and-drop ease of use. They are also provided in 4K resolution video files, so you can scale them up and scale them down (as needed) to fit your needs.

As a bonus, I’ve included all of the still versions of the files used to create the animated textures, as well.

This FREE pack of animated gritty textures includes the following:

  • 18 animated texture video files (h.264) each around 5 seconds in length
  • 18+ still versions of all textures (.jpg)

Why I Love These Textures So Much

Textured Stills

I like to have a grab-bag of things like this that you can use extremely quick, like when it’s late at night and you just want to get your project done. I look for things I can just drag into my project that will add a bit of production value without adding too much of a noticeable stamp.

These things need to be simple, and they need to feel like YOU made them. Stuff that is too specific never works. Something like an animated texture still leaves enough of the creativity up to the user, while still adding that little bit of extra spice.

This pack has a lot of different varying levels of “noticeable” texture — from simple everyday papers and fabrics to crumpled up notebook paper and brown bags. That’s why I like it. I’d say about 50% of end-tag animations may benefit from just a little bit of added texture, whether it’s subtle or pretty noticeable.

The same could be said for still design, which is why we’ve included the higher-resolution still versions, as well.

How to Use the Animated Textures

4K Video Files

These animated textures are 4K video files, but you’ll notice they are extremely short (file sizes must be taken into account), and they also lack any color whatsoever. This will take a little bit of elbow grease on your end.

How to Add Color

Add Color

The easiest way to add color to your textures (in both After Effects and Premiere Pro) is to use the Tint effect. Here, you can easily just swap the white color to your desired color, which should give you the desired result.

If you use a different software, there will certainly be an equivalent type of effect. Anywhere that you can easily change the highlight or white color of the clip, you’ll be in business.

How to Make the Clip Longer

This is also somewhat varied from program to program, but these clips are infinitely looping, so you can make them however long you need to make them. In most cases, the easiest way to create a longer length clip is to duplicate or copy and paste. In Premiere and Final Cut, you can click, hold alt, and drag — this will create a copy.

In After Effects, you can right-click on your desired clip, then go to Modify>Interpret Footage and change the Loops text field to a higher number.

Compatible with Non-linear Editing Software

These free animated textures should work just fine in any non-linear editing software (NLE). I recommend using them with alpha mattes and text, shapes, or other effects. With these textures, you’ve got lots of options, so go nuts.

At the very least, if you want to add some texture to your entire project or animation, you could drag it on the top and set it to the Multiply transfer mode. You might also get some interesting results with the Overlay and Hard Light transfer modes.

Hope you enjoy these textures as much as I do. Have fun!
