It’s no surprise that there are several impressive stories behind the actual story<\/em> of Todd Douglas Miller<\/a>\u2019s latest, Apollo 11<\/a><\/em>, which leapt out of the IMAX gate earlier this month and has now made its way into wider theatrical release (where it’s maintaining a scorching 100% at Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>). The film is overwhelmingly beautiful, assembled entirely from archival footage, some of it sourced from 165 never-before-seen reels<\/a> of 70mm Panavision film covering Apollo missions 8-13. And those reels were scanned on a prototype scanner capable of 8K resolution that moves the archival film on a cushion of air without ever touching it<\/a><\/em>. And who wouldn’t<\/em> cut a complete, nine-day<\/em> edit<\/a> of the mission to create an accurate timeline from which to cull a 90-minute feature documentary?<\/p>\n
