Jordan Peele’s Us is killing it at the box office \u2014 like a homicidal doppelg\u00e4nger. Here are a few upcoming scary movies looking to duplicate that success.<\/h2>\n

If the staggering number of box office records<\/a> broken by Us<\/a><\/em> are any measure, it seems horror\u2019s having a moment \u2014\u00a0Jordan Peele\u2019s<\/a> follow-up to 2017\u2019s Get Out<\/em><\/a> had a $70 million dollar opening weekend. And, seriously, it pretty much broke every record ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s great news for anyone craving more big-screen bumps in the night, filmmakers and cinephiles alike \u2014 the next few months are loaded with horror releases,<\/strong> perfect for peeking at from behind your fingers.<\/p>\n

Pet Sematary (April 5)<\/h3>\n

Hollywood has long been in the habit of adapting Stephen King’s work, and the success of 2017\u2019s It<\/a><\/em> means they won’t be breaking that habit anytime soon. Next up \u2014\u00a0<\/em>Pet Sematary<\/em><\/a> \u2014 from director duo Kevin K\u00f6lsch<\/a> and Dennis Widmyer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This tale of digging things up that should probably remain buried has already been a movie once, but the directors of this version promise (light spoilers in the following link) some new takes<\/a> on the classic source material. We\u2019re just excited to see what John Lithgow does<\/a> with the role of iconic old-timer, Jud Crandall<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Curse of La Llorona (April 19)<\/h3>\n

A Latin American folktale that has terrified people for years, La Llorona is a spectral, weeping woman that drags children to a watery grave. Now, this good old-fashioned historia de fantasmas<\/em> gets a chance to scare a whole new audience with the release of The Curse of La Llorona<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Fans of The Conjuring<\/em> series<\/a> should take note: though New Line Cinema isn\u2019t promoting The Curse of La Llorona<\/em> as part of The Conjuring<\/em> universe, Tony Amendola\u2019s<\/a> character, Father Perez, is featured prominently in 2014\u2019s Annabelle<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

BrightBurn (May 24)<\/h3>\n

Alternate versions of Superman\u2019s life have been done before. DC\u2019s Red Son<\/a><\/em> is set in a world where his alien-crib-ship landed in the Soviet Union, for instance. BrightBurn<\/a><\/em> isn\u2019t taking the “red scare” approach. No, this film (produced by James Gunn<\/a>) offers a “what-if-Superman-was-super-evil” kind of scare.<\/p>\n

Obviously, this movie isn\u2019t an actual Superman story, because the universe is a cruel, unjust place. But now that Gunn\u2019s been spending some time at the DC offices<\/a>, we want to believe he, at least, asked a couple of high-level execs if BrightBurn<\/em> maybe could<\/em> be.<\/p>\n

Ma (May 31)<\/h3>\n

Blumhouse Productions<\/a>, the company behind such scary offerings as Paranormal Activity<\/a><\/em>, Insidious<\/a><\/em>, and Get Out<\/em>, is back with Ma<\/a> \u2014 <\/em>a movie that sounds a bit like a genre mashup of Misery<\/a> <\/em>and Dude, Where\u2019s My Car Because Now I\u2019m Afraid Of Octavia Spencer So I Have To Leave Immediately<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to info supplied by Universal Pictures<\/a>, Ma<\/em> seems to be a spin on the classic: “lady invites teens to party in her basement, insists they call her Ma, demands they don’t curse, asks that they never go upstairs, gets really murdery” trope. We\u2019re in.<\/p>\n

Midsommar (August 9)<\/h3>\n

Writer\/director Ari Aster<\/a> made quite an impression with his (OMG \u2014 Did I just see that?<\/em>) feature-film debut, Hereditary<\/a><\/em>. (Insert tongue pop here.) His follow-up, Midsommar<\/a><\/em>, looks to be just as much of a head-trip.<\/p>\n

The trailer features some cult stuff, some Scandinavian stuff, some young-people-at-a-weird-festival stuff \u2014 there\u2019s no telling where Aster\u2019s going to go here. In an interview with Vulture<\/a>, he says, “It\u2019s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary<\/em> is a family tragedy. It\u2019s less overtly a horror movie, but it\u2019s still working in that same space. It\u2019s very macabre. But people shouldn\u2019t go in expecting Hereditary<\/em>.” He continues, “It\u2019s a Wizard of Oz<\/em> for perverts.” Okay, then.<\/p>\n

Upcoming Fall and Winter Frights<\/h3>\n

2019\u2019s cooler months look promising for horror fans, too, including It: Chapter Two<\/em><\/a> (September), the long-awaited Zombieland: Double Tap<\/a><\/em> (October), and Doctor Sleep<\/a> (November) \u2014<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>a sequel to The Shining<\/em><\/a>, starring Ewan McGregor<\/a> and Rebecca Ferguson<\/a>. Until then, the films above should be enough to keep you checking under your bed and in your closet.<\/p>\n
