It brings me no joy to listen (or read) people\u2019s thoughts on whether they prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/a24films.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">A24<\/a> movies or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Marvel<\/a> movies. And, believe me, I don&#8217;t have a dog in this fight! I watch a few A24 movies a year and a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/14-effect-tutorials-loki-wandavision-falcon-winter-soldier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Marvel<\/a> movies a year, but wouldn\u2019t call myself a huge fan of either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I bring this up because a screenshot of a previous article I wrote for this blog has been making its rounds on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mistermoviespod\/status\/1442129991630790658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Twitter<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/premiumbeat\/posts\/10158267694472129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/A24\/comments\/pw63et\/saw_this_article_about_a24_vs_marvel_the_battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Reddit<\/a>, apparently). The original article, written back in June 2021, is titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/a24-vs-marvel-future-of-cinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">A24 vs. Marvel: The Battle for the Future of Cinema<\/a>&#8221; (and if you haven\u2019t read it, you should before you comment or respond to this one!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">i don\u2019t feel so good <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6rDz2aBggz\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/6rDz2aBggz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \ud83d\ude36\u200d\ud83c\udf2b\ufe0f\ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8 (@uncle_unchained) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/uncle_unchained\/status\/1442129991630790658?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">September 26, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as I can tell, the tweet above from Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mistermoviespod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">@mistermoviespod<\/a> seems to be either the first (or at least biggest) one in terms of re-sparking this debate. In fact, while I certainly thought the title of the article might catch people\u2019s attention, it wasn\u2019t my first choice to frame the argument that way. I could have just titled the piece something like, \u201cHow Big-Budget Superhero Blockbusters and Mainstream Indie Distributors Are Making It Harder for the Rest of Us,\u201d but that\u2019s too many words (and not as fun).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gives me no pleasure to debate between which movies are \u201cbetter\u201d when comparing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0371746\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Iron Man<\/a><\/em> vs <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4925292\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Lady Bird<\/a><\/em>. (However, upon reading many of these comments and retweets, I do actually enjoy the debates on who would win in a battle between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0478970\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Ant-Man<\/a> and the goat from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4263482\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">The Witch<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire idea for this article simply came from a realization on my part that most of my friends who work in film and video seem to gravitate to one of these two camps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, while these two camps don\u2019t <em>only<\/em> consist of these American movie studios and distributors, they&#8217;re certainly two of the most popular and serve as good cultural reference points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-filmmaking-perspective\"><span id=\"a-filmmaking-perspective\">A Filmmaking Perspective<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/43kTjPD-qAk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other odd trend that I noticed when people were discussing the article title was that many people assumed that this was an article written for a film review\/criticism website (like Screen Rant or similar). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we do write about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/genre-films-fantastic-fest-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">popular movies<\/a> with occasional criticism here on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><em>The Beat<\/em><\/a>, the majority of the focus of this blog is to empower and support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/short-form-documentary-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">filmmakers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/why-hollywood-dp-greig-fraser-is-nearly-right-about-the-new-iphone-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">video professionals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, that was the angle for the original piece, to take a deeper look at how these two camps of filmmakers and film professionals are responding to this further segmentation within the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should you actually try to identify yourself and your personal career brand with one studio or the other? It&#8217;s indeed troubling that most film fans (and even filmmakers) are feeling like they have to pick one of these two camps rather than having more freedom to carve out their own paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also think it\u2019s annoying that film criticism is furthering this divide by pitting these two different types of film types against one another. Whether that be in thought-pieces on film criticism websites, or by reviewing box office numbers like they\u2019re college football rankings, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be cool, actually, if the majority of us got together and took a stand against our film discussion and shared cinema experience being segmented into these types of us-versus-them mentalities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can like A24 films <em>and<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/marvel-cinematic-universe-future-film\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Marvel<\/a> movies! You can like one and dislike the other without making it about you being \u201cbetter\u201d or \u201cworse\u201d than your friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can even dislike both and prefer the vast amount of incredible films that exist outside of these two recent, and mostly American-centric, confines! (And yes, there are hundreds of thousands of films from across the globe that don\u2019t fall into these two narrow categories.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, I think the right course of action is to take a step back and let the debate continue on for as long as necessary. Again, I have no preference in this fight and have no wish to see people change their opinions about their favorite (or least favorite) films or franchises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, I do hope for those of us who work in film and aspire to make movies of our own one day, that we&#8217;ll at least come together a bit more to discuss how we want our cinematic legacy to look.
