At the core of every great filmmaker, a simple storyteller\u2019s heart beats. And with the illustriously talented filmmaker Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, we have the beating rhythmic heart of great storytelling. With his latest film Bardo (aka Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths), the Oscar award-winning director he\u2019s unleashed his most unbridled and personal films to date, yet \u2014 despite all of its ambition \u2014 it\u2019s still a film about the heart of a storyteller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fittingly enough, we were able to chat with Mart\u00edn Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, a long-time friend and collaborator of I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s who similarly began his storytelling career in what seemingly might be the unlikeliest of sources \u2014 radio and sound design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving as the supervising sound editor and mixer, Mart\u00edn Hern\u00e1ndez is a two-time Academy Award-nominated sound editor from his previous collaborative efforts with I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, including Birdman and The Revenant. He\u2019s also an astute student of the art of storytelling and one of the best experts in the medium to share with us some insights into how sound can be used to tell the story behind the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PremiumBeat: Tell us how you first connected with Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu and brought you on this project.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hernandez<\/strong>: Well, it\u2019s almost been a 40-year relationship. I met [I\u00f1\u00e1rritu] a long time ago. We were in college together studying what\u2019s now called communications. We met there when we were probably 18 or 19 and, to keep a conversation from getting too boring (laughs), we ended up doing radio together, and it was very successful.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then moved into advertising, and he got into directing, which ultimately became his starting point. Fast forward some 30 years later, and I was reading the script for what would eventually become Bardo in probably 2019. But then the pandemic hit everyone in the world, so it was delayed for a while before things changed, and now\u2026 the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
