I realize that a lot of editors are still using Final Cut Pro 7,<\/strong> so I thought I would revisit\u00a020 of my favorite FCP shortcuts<\/strong>. Force yourself to start using shortcuts in your video editing work. They may seem cumbersome at first, but once committed to memory they’ll result in big time-savings and an overall more efficient video editing workflow.<\/p>\n

1. Mark a Clip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nX<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nWhen you put the playhead over a clip in the timeline it marks the clip. Option + X clears in and out points.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

2. Fit to Window<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nShift <\/strong>+ Z<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nFits the timeline (or canvas\/viewer) to the width of the window. Shift + Option + Z zooms to a selected clip (or range of clips).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

3. Bin to New Tab<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nOption <\/strong>+ Double-Click on a Bin<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nPuts Bin on it’s own Tab,\u00a0so it doesn’t float and get lost. If you do lose a bin behind the other windows, go to the menu>Window to find it. If your windows are a mess, Control + U will reset them to the default layout.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

4. Move Playhead 1 Second<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nShift <\/strong>+ Right <\/strong>or Left Arrow<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nMoves the playhead left or right one second. Good for slowly scanning through your timeline.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

6. Reset to Default<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nControl<\/strong> + U<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nGot windows floating around haphazardly? This shortcut will quickly snap your project view back to it’s default state.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

7. Make a Favorite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nOption <\/strong>+ F<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nApply a filter to a clip in the viewer. \u00a0Then use this shortcut to make that filter a favorite. The favorite now appears in the Effects tab in the FCP Browser.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

8. Overwrite\/Insert Video<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n

Action:<\/td>\nUse this shortcut to quickly switch between list and icon views in the FCP Browser.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

10. Paste\/Remove Attributes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nOption <\/strong>+ V <\/strong>or Command <\/strong>+ Option <\/strong>+ V\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nOnce you copy the attributes of a clip you can paste them onto another clip by using the Option + V shortcut (once used you’ll be able to select which attributes you’d like to paste). Adding Command to Option + V will remove the attributes of a selected clip.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

11. Toggle Waveforms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n

Action:<\/td>\nSeeing the waveforms will let you make more informed editing decisions about your audio but turning them off may result in better quality playback.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

12. Overwrite Sequence Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nCommand <\/strong>+ F10<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nUsing this shortcut will keep sequences from nesting if you are editing a sequence into a sequence.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

13. Trimming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
Shortcut:<\/td>\nV<\/strong>: Will move your playhead to the nearest edit point. U: Will toggle between ripple and roll.\u00a0<<\/strong> and ><\/strong> will trim a frame left or right.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Action:<\/td>\nYou can also trim a clip numerically,\u00a0Type + 5<\/strong> to trim 5 frames right or -5<\/strong> for 5 frames left.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

16. Deselect or Lock Tracks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n
