Needless to say, I create a lot of <strong>animated charts<\/strong> for their videos. Bar charts are pretty simple (though they can be a little tedious), but I was struggling with an easy way to create <strong>pie charts<\/strong>. Eventually, I worked out this method that allowed me to be exact on the values, while being easy to create and animate on and off screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chart_Intro.gif\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Pie Chart After Effects\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chart_Intro.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first step is to create a precomp inside whatever comp you are working. Aspect doesn\u2019t really matter at all, but it should be reasonably big; I generally make a solid the <strong>same size as my parent comp<\/strong> and precompose that. In this example, I\u2019ll name the precomp \u201cPie Chart\u201d. All but the final step in making the pie chart will take place in this precomp. <em>Click any of the images below for a larger view.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Precomp.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38336 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Precomp.png\" alt=\"Precomp\" width=\"315\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next step is to take a solid in your precomp and set both it\u2019s <strong>X Anchor Point and Position values to 0<\/strong>. This pins it to the left side of the screen, so as you scale it up or down, the left side stays in place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Solid_Anchor.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38339 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Solid_Anchor.png\" alt=\"Solid_Anchor\" width=\"468\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, duplicate that first solid as many times as necessary so that you have the same number of solids as you need slices in your pie chart. Set the colors on the chart to the colors you want each slice to have. I generally go from <strong>dark at the top<\/strong> to <strong>light at the bottom.<\/strong> When the chart is complete, it will start at the top and go <strong>counter-clockwise<\/strong> around the circle, starting with the top layer (you\u2019ll see how this works in a few steps).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Solid_Colors.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38340 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Solid_Colors.png\" alt=\"Solid_Colors\" width=\"468\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now we get to typing actual values. Here\u2019s the example data set I\u2019ll be using:<\/p>\n<p><strong>{A=10%, B=15%, C=7%, D=23%, E=15%, F=30%}<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to do this by scale, which has the advantage of sharing the same \u201cmaximum\u201d that a pie chart does of 100%. I\u2019ve used round numbers, but <strong>values with decimal places<\/strong> work just fine with this method.<\/p>\n<p>What you do is <strong>unlink the scale values<\/strong>, then go from top to bottom, and set each slices <strong>X-scale<\/strong> to the value of that particular slice <strong><em>plus<\/em><\/strong> the <strong>scale of the layer above it<\/strong>. So, the first solid\u2019s scale is just \u201c10%\u201d, since there isn\u2019t a layer above it. The second solid\u2019s scale is \u201c15%\u201d + the 10% from the first layer = 25% (you can just type the math into the property input and it will do the sum for you). The third solid\u2019s scale is \u201c7%\u201d + the 25% from the layer above it = 32% \u2013 and so on. You can see the final values here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Scales.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38337 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Scales.png\" alt=\"Scales\" width=\"467\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the math confuses you, it works just as well to set up some <strong>expressions<\/strong>. Put the actual \u201cvalue\u201d of each slice in the <strong>X-scale<\/strong>, then option click the stopwatch for each layer\u2019s position, then paste this expression, nothing the instructions for using the <strong>expression pickwhip<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>X = value[0]+(pickwhip the layer above\u2019s X-scale value);<br \/>\nY = value[1];<br \/>\n[X,Y]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Scales_Expressions.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38338 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Scales_Expressions.png\" alt=\"Scales_Expressions\" width=\"467\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whether you do the math yourself or set up the expressions to do it for you, you\u2019ll end up with the same values and result:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chart_Flat.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38331 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chart_Flat.png\" alt=\"Chart_Flat\" width=\"478\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, go back to the main comp, and apply the \u201c<strong>Polar Coordinates<\/strong>\u201d effect to the precomp:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Polar.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38334 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Polar.png\" alt=\"Polar Coordinates\" width=\"457\" height=\"915\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Change the Type of Conversion to \u201cRect to Polar\u201d and set Interpolation to \u201c100%\u201d, scale the precomp down a bit, and there you go!
