The Autodesk Support is wonderful, some of the best in the business&#8230;but it is possible for you to do-it-yourself. \u00a0Now most will tell you to do this via <strong>Terminal<\/strong> and <strong>Command Line<\/strong>. But I don&#8217;t know too many users who like Terminal commands. It&#8217;s 2014, we have GUI.<\/p>\n<p>So below is a video tutorial that will explain how Autodesk Smoke saves it&#8217;s clips metadata and how to use the Auto Saves and recovers your Sequences, Clips and Libraries if they are damaged due to a crash, corruption, or even user error.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE: Be very careful when working with Project Backups. \u00a0It is possible to loose data if you are not careful. It is easy once you understand the files and what they do. There are a few differences in the files layout, but the concepts of how the metadata is stored is still valid.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"step-by-step-clip-library-backup-recovery\">Step-by-Step Clip Library Backup Recovery<span style=\"font-size: 1.17em; font-weight: normal;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Close Smoke, as you don&#8217;t want it running and autosaving when you are working in the backup files.\u00a0In<strong> Finder<\/strong> use the <strong>Go To Folder<\/strong> option in the <strong>GO Menu [Shift+CMD+G].\u00a0<\/strong>Type<strong><em> \/usr\/discreet\/ <\/em><\/strong>and press <strong>GO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The use of <strong>\/usr\/discreet\/<\/strong>&#8230; is due to legacy file structure when Smoke was a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autodesk_Media_and_Entertainment\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Discreet Logic<\/a><\/strong> company product before it was acquired by Autodesk. The file path is maintained for compatibility reasons with archives from previous Smoke versions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.05.21-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-42292\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.05.21-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the <strong>clip folder<\/strong> and then open the <strong>Media Volume<\/strong> for your storage. In the example I have 3 media storage folders on 3 different drives. You will only have 1 <strong>(stonefs7)<\/strong> normally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.05.50-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-42293\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.05.50-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the folder that matches your <strong>Project Name.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.06.43-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42294\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.06.43-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside you will see <strong>.clib files<\/strong> and and .<strong>clib_hist folders<\/strong>. The names will match the <strong>Libraries<\/strong> in your <strong>Smoke Media Library<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.08.38-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42295\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/pbblogassets\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-21-at-7.08.38-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>.clib files<\/strong> are also incremented as <strong>000.clib through 003.clib<\/strong>. \u00a0000.clib is the current and active library being loaded in Smoke. The 001-003.clib files are backups that get created when you save or the Smoke auto saves.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>clib_hist folders<\/strong> contain the<strong> CFX setup<\/strong> information for the clip.
