From the car sequence in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0206634\/?ref_=nm_flmg_cin_13\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Children of Men<\/a><\/em>\u00a0to the space debris\u00a0sequence in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1454468\/?ref_=nm_flmg_cin_7\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Gravity<\/a><\/em>, Emmanuel has\u00a0pushed the envelope in terms of what a filmmaker can do with a long continuous shot. In 2014 he completed work as cinematographer for the award-winning,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #545454;\">Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu directed film,<\/span>\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2562232\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Birdman<\/a><\/em>. This film\u00a0could very well win him another Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"birdman-creating-a-continuous-world\"><em>Birdman:<\/em> Creating a Continuous World<\/h3>\n<p><em>Birdman<\/em> uses long takes to make the film seem as though it was filmed in one single long shot. This was done by filming long sequences and finding cut points that weren&#8217;t\u00a0jarring. Below is a short featurette of <em>Birdman<\/em> that explores the process of creating such a world, as well as the complex\u00a0planning necessary in terms of camera movement, lighting of each space, framing actors and extras, among a thousand other things.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ar-1s3yxglk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is a short clip from the film that showcases the camera movement and changing POV, which moves from a third person to Michael Keaton&#8217;s character then back to a roaming third person. It&#8217;s just one example that shows how Emmanuel and director Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu meticulously crafted each and every long take of the film.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lM7Lm1J-QV0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"art-of-the-long-take\">Art of the Long Take<\/h3>\n<p>Back in the early days of cinema long takes were a common narrative tool. Hitchcock was one of the first to employ this technique, all the way back in 1948.\u00a0Fast-forward 67 years later and Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, along with Emmanuel Lubezki, are trying to do the same.\u00a0However they aren&#8217;t the only director and cinematographer to effectively use the long shot to tell a story. Here are a few other examples of classic long shots in the history of film&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hitchcocks-rope\">Hitchcock&#8217;s <em>Rope<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Alfred Hitchcock&#8217;s 1948 film <a title=\"Rope - Alfred Hitchcock\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rope_%28film%29\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>Rope<\/em><\/a> consists of 11 shots, with 10 of these shots\u00a0lasting a minimum of 9 minutes. It was arguably Hitchcock&#8217;s most experimental film. Planning was careful and plotted out to perfection so that there was\u00a0nearly no editing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here is a clip from the opening of the film:<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aJo5ih2HkxE\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"one-long-russian-ark\">One Long Russian Ark<\/h3>\n<p>While Hitchcock wanted to develop a film that had no cuts he could never fully realize that, but got close. More recently Russian director accomplished that feat with 2002&#8217;s <em>Russian Ark. <\/em>This film was shot entirely inside St. Petersburg&#8217;s Hermitage Museum with\u00a0one camera in one take&#8230;that lasted 96 mins. The first two attempts were interrupted, but the final and third take was successful. The film was nominated for the highly coveted Palme d&#8217;Or at the Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here are the final 3 minutes of the film:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gbkgAx8jdmc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"goodfellas-and-the-steady-steadicam\">Goodfellas and the Steady Steadicam<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000217\/?ref_=tt_ov_dr\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>\u00a0has utilized the long shot for many years. But out of all of his films that use the long shot, none of them seem to be as highly regarded as the Steadicam tracking shot from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0099685\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Goodfellas<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJEEVtqXdK8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-mastery-of-steven-spielberg\">The Mastery of Steven Spielberg<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000229\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Spielberg<\/a> has utilized the\u00a0long shot in <em>many<\/em> of his films like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0073195\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Jaws<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0181689\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Minority Report<\/a><\/em>. The entire opening scene,\u00a0known as the &#8216;Space Debris Sequence&#8217;, is probably one of the most intense openings in film history:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"-2\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cEkILY1h6fA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"children-of-men-car-sequence\"><em>Children of Men<\/em> Car Sequence<\/h3>\n<p>Alfonso and Emmanuel strike again with an intense car sequence that allows the camera to move around the interior of the the car the characters are riding in. The short film was shot using 3 cameras, following three subjects who would all appear on the screen at the same time. During the editing phase the frame was broken into 3rds and in each panel a single uninterrupted shot displayed until the end of the film when all three characters\u00a0come together\u00a0and Camera A expands to take over the full frame.<\/p>\n<p>It was an amazing experience to say the least and taught me that rehearsal is vitally important to crafting a successful long shot.\u00a0It also taught me that the long take can be a wildly effective narrative tool. It allows the filmmaker to really immerse the audience into the world of the character.
