For those unfamiliar, CES (the Consumer Electronic Show) is Vegas&#8217; largest convention of the year, a massive expo that showcases the latest gadgets and technology from around the world. This year was a whirlwind of wearables, VR, 4K and drones&#8230;they were everywhere. We took a big picture look at CES and narrowed down the\u00a05 things from the show floor that every filmmaker should be paying attention to.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-drones-drones-and-more-drones\">1. Drones, Drones and MORE\u00a0Drones<\/h3>\n<p>The showing of video\u00a0drones was\u00a0in full force, for both consumer and professional usage. DJI showed off the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/product\/inspire-1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">4K Inspire 1 <\/a>which is <a href=\"https:\/\/store.dji.com\/product\/inspire-1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">listed at $3399<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; sure to be a popular choice with professional filmmakers and video producers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Check out this video from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCXuqSBlHAE6Xw-yeJA0Tunw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Linus Tech Tips<\/a> for a short review of the Inspire 1:<\/em><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2UdhgnxE6q0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other newcomers to the video drone market are <a title=\"AirDog Drone\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airdog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">AirDog<\/a> and the <a title=\"HEXO+\" href=\"http:\/\/hexoplus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">HEXO+<\/a>, both &#8216;smart-flying&#8217; Go-Pro mounted drones that automatically follow the operator&#8230;no remote control needed.<\/p>\n<p><em>See the HEXO+ in action:<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FzI2bJAL_Lo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although GoPro was rumored to announce a GoPro at this year&#8217;s CES, it didn&#8217;t happen. &#8220;<a title=\"GoPro Drone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/columnist\/baig\/2015\/01\/06\/ces2015-drones-invade-tech-show-ces-2015\/21351067\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">We are not announcing or showing a drone at CES<\/a>,&#8221; says Kelly Baker, GoPro&#8217;s director of media relations. We&#8217;ll be curious to see if this announcement is made at the 2015 NAB Show (in April).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-dji-inspire-1-mount-a-4k-handheld-camera\">2. DJI Inspire 1 Mount a 4K Handheld Camera<\/h3>\n<p>For filmmakers, this may be one of the most interesting showings at CES. Essentially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">DJI<\/a> has taken their drone technology and packed it into a small handheld unit.\u00a0While not as robust at their <a title=\"DJI Ronin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/product\/ronin\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Ronin 3-Axis<\/a>, this handheld\u00a0system records in 4K and produces a nice, smooth image. While a camera like this doesn&#8217;t have the dynamic range that a true A camera does, it should offer\u00a0enough dynamic range to be used for 2nd Unit work or B-roll.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here is a great introduction to the Inspire 1 Mount by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCiDJtJKMICpb9B1qf7qjEOA\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Tested<\/a>:<\/em><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pVj5ON2T4Sc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-move-over-3d-virtual-reality-is-going-to-be-the-next-hollywood-gimmick\">3. Move Over 3D, Virtual Reality\u00a0is Going to be the Next Hollywood &#8216;Gimmick&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>VR is coming mainstream, and while it&#8217;s being lovingly embraced by the video game community, the film community hasn&#8217;t adopted it in the same way. The one big challenge I see with VR is the fact that our eyes naturally pull things in and out of focus as we dart them around\u00a0an environment. <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2014\/08\/developer-cites-motion-sickness-in-delaying-oculus-rift-support\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Ars Technica<\/a> did an article this past August detailing\u00a0the image delay in\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Oculus Rift<\/a>, an issue that\u00a0gives\u00a0some users VR Sickness (similar to motion sickness). However, there is word that both Oculus and Sony (who is developing the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.us.playstation.com\/2014\/03\/18\/introducing-project-morpheus\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Morpheus<\/a>) are closer to solving the VR Sickness issue. If this proves to be true then we could be entering into a new wave of immersive cinema.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxmovies.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">20th Century Fox<\/a>\u00a0Innovation Lab gave a 3 minute VR demo set in the film world of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2305051\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Wild<\/a>, the Golden Globe nominated film. Mike Dunn President of Fox Home Entertainment told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that the 3 minute short will allow viewer to experience a fully 360 degree environment along with actress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000702\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Reese Witherspoon<\/a>. These moves mimic an increasing trend over the last few years &#8211; a hit to traditional media outlets in favor of curated\u00a0web\u00a0based and streaming distribution channels, resulting in even more outlets for media creators.<\/p>\n<p>LG also showed off its new 8K OLED TV at CES. While this isn&#8217;t something directly related to film\/video production, just think of the convenience it would provide to charge the batteries for your DSLR or production equipment.<\/p>\n<p>While any talk of using WattUP in this way doesn&#8217;t seem to be on the radar, we&#8217;re curious to see how the capabilities expand in the future.<iframe loading=\"lazy\"
