When you approach a process doc you are essentially given an\u00a0idea that already has a treatment. Produced by <a title=\"Art+Vibes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.art-vibes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Art+Vibes<\/a> for the gun manufacturer <a title=\"Barreta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beretta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Beretta<\/a>, the film &#8216;Human Technology&#8217; outlines how one of Beretta&#8217;s premium guns are created. If you haven&#8217;t seen the film already here it is:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lfo1QUGfWZE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The cinematography is pretty mind-blowing, don&#8217;t you think? The film excels in every aspect of storytelling including color, composition, and pace. After seeing this video I had a few questions for the cinematographer so I reached out to\u00a0<a title=\"Mauro\" href=\"http:\/\/maurochiarello.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Mauro Chiarello<\/a>\u00a0to ask him about how he achieved the fantastic shots.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"qa-with-mauro-chiarello\">Q&amp;A with\u00a0Mauro Chiarello<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q: What type of camera\/lenses did you use?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> I shot &#8216;Human Technology&#8217; using <strong>Arri Alexa Plus<\/strong> and <strong>Arri Alexa M<\/strong> and lensed with a <strong>Cooke S4 Primes<\/strong> set, <strong>2 macros Zeiss<\/strong> (60mm+100mm) and <strong>Angienieux Optimo Zoom 24-290mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Did the video use mostly natural or artificial lighting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> I\u2019ve worked with mostly artificial lighting. I shot with natural light for the\u00a0first part and the very last one: the steel coulee at the furnace, the man walking into the woods, and last 3 shots with the hunter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-13-at-12.09.41-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-50442\" src=\"https:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-13-at-12.09.41-PM-1024x292.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-01-13 at 12.09.41 PM\" width=\"900\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did just a few shots mixing natural and artificial lights, all the rest were\u00a0done with\u00a0artificial lighting. Even the robot sequences were filmed with artificial lighting.\u00a0I did light setups and we changed the elements and background, going for\u00a0a more clean direction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How long did it take you to shoot the entire documentary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> 3 days shooting + 3 days for location scouting and tech <a title=\"Recce\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recce_%28filmmaking%29\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">recce<\/a> with my crew.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Did you run into any unique challenges on-set?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> A lot of stuff we shot was done in tricky circumstances. The most difficult one was the first day when we start shooting in a blast furnace at a very high temperature for tech equipment and for us too! The place was very dangerous and we had a lot of limits of movement inside. So very difficult to frame it in the proper way. I couldn\u2019t do tech recce for this location before shooting and it\u2019s so frustrating for me when I can\u2019t move free with the camera in a place. Plus we had just one shot for the steel coulee in all its stages! Just once! I mounted the Optimo zoom with remote controls on camera and me and my crew we moved very fast back and forth into the place! We&#8217;ve filmed as much as we could, framing as best as we could and sweating more than we could imagine! My camera crew supported me very well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Do you optimize your footage for post-production in any way? (Shooting techniques, color considerations, etc.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> Most of the time I\u2019ve already made most of the decisions about color direction, frame rate, lenses and everything else before I start shooting.<\/p>\n<p>This means two things: 1st my footage is always optimized for post-production; 2nd there\u2019s not just one way to do it! It really changes every time. Each project has its own specific features, which require their own peculiar treatments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-13-at-12.07.30-PM.png\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-50444\" src=\"https:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-13-at-12.07.30-PM-1024x364.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-01-13 at 12.07.30 PM\" width=\"900\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But something I usually like to do when shooting in Alexa, especially with natural or mixed light, is to check color temperature taking the Auto White Balance on a grey card. It\u2019s something that really helps me to make good color decisions on set.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Do you have any tips for other filmmakers who may be shooting a process documentary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> I usually don\u2019t do process documentary, this was my first one!
