In this post I&#8217;ve rounded up a few of my favorite\u00a0<strong>video editing<\/strong> mantras.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/116337897?color=0089ad&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" width=\"848\" height=\"477\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"walter-murchs-rule-of-six\">Walter Murch&#8217;s Rule of Six<\/h2>\n<ol style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<li>Emotion (51%)<\/li>\n<li>Story (23%)<\/li>\n<li>Rhythm (10%)<\/li>\n<li>Eye-trace (7%)<\/li>\n<li>Two-dimensional plane of screen (5%)<\/li>\n<li>Three-dimensional space of action (4%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These six guidelines are what legendary film editor <strong><a title=\"IMDB - Walter Murch - Video Editing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004555\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Walter Murch<\/a>\u00a0believes are some of the most important things to consider when making a cut.<\/strong> The percentages beside each one are, for Murch, a simple way of demonstrating which rules carry the most weight. For example, a cut that works for the emotion of the moment is better than ones that simple adhere to the continuity within the scene. This demands a certain amount of discipline and decisiveness, but it is vital to creating great work.<\/p>\n<p>Often when you&#8217;ve taken a major piece out of your film, you need to leave it a while to see if you really miss it.
