Use the effect masking tools to create quick vignettes in Premiere Pro!<\/h2>\n

The effect masking<\/strong> tools in the latest version of Premiere are super powerful. An obvious use is to create face blurs<\/a>, but it can be used for so much more!<\/p>\n

vIn previous versions of Premiere, one of the only ways to create a vignette effect<\/strong> without buying a third-party plugin was to create a vignette in SpeedGrade<\/strong>, save it as a preset, and import it using the Lumetri engine<\/strong> (you can read more about this process here<\/a>). With the effect masking tools in the latest version, you can do this using a simple Luma Curves<\/strong> effect!<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll start with this image that we want to put a vignette<\/strong> on:<\/p>\n

Next, we\u2019ll add a Luma Curve<\/strong> effect:<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll add a point and increase the contrast<\/strong> by pulling it down a little, then we\u2019ll click the \u201cCreate Elliptical Mask<\/strong>\u201d button on the effect:<\/p>\n

Clicking \u201cCreate Elliptical Mask<\/strong>\u201d will add an oval mask that you can see and interact with in the Program Monitor, which limits the effect<\/strong> to that area:<\/p>\n

To create our vignette, we\u2019ll set the feather to around 400<\/strong>, check the \u201cInverted<\/strong>\u201d box so that the effect is applied outside the mask<\/strong>, not inside, and we\u2019ll click and drag the points of the mask in the Program Monitor to be close to the edges of the frame:<\/p>\n

There you have it! It\u2019s super easy, and uses just the built-in tools of Premiere<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, you can\u2019t save mask setting with effect presets<\/strong>, so you\u2019ll have to set it up each time you want to create a vignette<\/strong>. On the plus side, you can now adjust and control<\/strong> your vignette setting right in Premiere, and it\u2019s super fast to set up!<\/p>\n
