In an previous article, I analyzed the orange-teal look<\/a>, a style popularized by the Transformers<\/a>\u00a0series that’s now featured in numerous Hollywood films, regardless of genre. Before Transformers<\/i>, there was The Matrix<\/i><\/a>, which showcased its own distinct look.<\/p>\n

The Matrix <\/i>depicts a technological dystopia, so the filmmakers decided the overall green tint<\/strong> was a nod to the monochromatic green of command-line computing, one of the first images used in the movie.<\/p>\n

The most interesting aspect of the film from a color\u00a0perspective is that The Matrix <\/i>runs contrary to traditional styles of rendering skin tones in healthier yellow, orange, or magenta registers.<\/strong> Skin is colored by the epidermis’s melanin as well as red-colored hemoglobin in the blood. Green skin, on the other hand, evokes decomposing or dead flesh.<\/p>\n

Most skin complexions fall in a general range that is approximated by DaVinci Resolve\u2019s Skin Tone Indicator,<\/i> which can be activated in the Vectorscope preferences. The indicator line runs between\u00a0red and yellow<\/strong>, the combination of our skin and blood.<\/p>\n

Many artists who use Photoshop\u2019s Curves<\/i> to manipulate a fashion image tend to steer away from the green slider, instead opting to utilize the red and blue to create distinct looks<\/a>. The Matrix <\/i>is the furthest thing from a fashion job though, so the Wachowskis<\/a> went in a different direction by addressing\u00a0the science fiction tone of the film.<\/p>\n

When referencing The Matrix<\/i>, consider your project\u2019s material and how much healthy skin tones matter. It may seem an obvious choice if you’re grading a fantasy, noir, or science fiction movie<\/strong>, but why not experiment with\u00a0other genres?<\/p>\n

Bringing in one of the stills from the film shows a definite bias toward green<\/strong>, and the image deviates from the Skin Tone Indicator <\/i>as we suspected.<\/p>\n

Play around with a slight green or cyan in the blacks.<\/strong> Apply extreme moves to the grade to see how much your footage can handle, and then dial it back to taste.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve brought the skin tones back so she looks a bit healthier, if you absolutely can\u2019t stand to have that green shade in her skin.<\/i><\/p>\n
