Let&#8217;s dig into music copyright, the repercussions for use, and easy ways to get quality music for your media projects.<\/h2>\n<p>Ten years ago I didn&#8217;t give too much thought to <strong>using commercial music in my web video projects.<\/strong> Maybe it was because I was younger, or maybe it was because the web was younger and many people were uninformed.\u00a0I was just starting my career as a video editor and my clients were often <strong>requesting commercial music<\/strong> in their projects. They&#8217;d request, &#8220;I want something that sounds like such and such popular band in my video.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The fastest route to get there was to grab those tracks, throw them in the edit and be on my way. I wasn&#8217;t cutting national TV ad spots. These were low profile, mostly web or closed network internal company videos. I wasn&#8217;t doing too much harm&#8230; so I thought.<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, there has been an increased public awareness around the legalities of <strong>using\u00a0copyrighted music in video and media projects<\/strong>. Additionally, video hosting services, like <a title=\"YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">YouTube<\/a> and <a title=\"Vimeo\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Vimeo<\/a> have made it increasingly difficult to use copyrighted tracks without artist compensation&#8230; and for good reason.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"napster-copyright-awareness-and-consumer-fear\">Napster, Copyright Awareness, and Consumer Fear<\/h3>\n<p>A quick look at how we got here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the early 2000&#8217;s, music file sharing (pirating) among consumers flourished. Napster was\u00a0joined by other popular apps like Kazaa and Limewire. In February of 2001, <a title=\"Napster User Number\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timeline_of_file_sharing\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Napster had a record 26.4M users<\/a>&#8230; incredible growth for less than two years of existence. And then the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), along with commercial artist labels, cracked down on these services. <a title=\"RIAA vs People\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/wp\/riaa-v-people-five-years-later#2\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Users were being sued and served takedown notices<\/a>. People got spooked&#8230; and rightfully so. Out of education (and fear) consumers backed off, paving the way for a successful iTunes launch that led\u00a0to increasing usership\u00a0throughout the decade. (In fact,\u00a0<a title=\"The Verge - iTunes Sales Decline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2014\/1\/3\/5271528\/music-sales-decline-for-the-first-time-since-the-itunes-store-opened\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">it wasn&#8217;t until recently that iTunes song sales begun to decline<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"youtube-and-the-copyright-music-police\">YouTube and the Copyright Music Police<\/h3>\n<p>Today, <a title=\"Spotify\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Spotify<\/a> and other paid or ad-supported streaming services are leading the future of consumer listening, but <strong>leaving artists with far less revenue than traditional album sales<\/strong>. The public would soon get a new lesson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2007, <a title=\"Evolution of YouTube&#039;s Content ID\" href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/09\/28\/from-monitor-to-monetize-the-evolution-of-youtube-content-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">YouTube\u00a0launched a ContentID system<\/a> <\/strong>to identify videos on their site that used copyrighted music. To date, the service has <a title=\"YouTube Content ID\" href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2014\/10\/youtube-has-paid-1-billion-to-rights-holders-via-content-id-since-2007\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">paid out over $1B to copyright holders<\/a> by running ads against any videos that use copyrighted music. But ads running against your video isn&#8217;t the worst things that can happen.
