So what are we to do as editors when all we can do is edit with a laptop? Let’s\u00a0take a look at five ways to\u00a0create stunning travel videos<\/strong> when you’re away from your workstation.<\/p>\n

1. Archive Footage Well<\/h3>\n

The first step when editing travel videos<\/strong> (or any video for that matter) is to log the footage well.<\/strong> Depending on your file structures and footage, your folders may take on different names. I\u2019ve found the best thing to do is organize by Trip>Location>Event<\/strong>.\u00a0Use descriptive words to name each clip, as you never know when you might want to access this footage later.<\/p>\n

Once you get home, another option would be to upload your travel footage to stock sites like Shutterstock<\/a> so you can make money with your unused footage<\/strong>. If you archive your footage right the first time, you\u2019ll be able to better locate individual clips.<\/p>\n

I suggest using an external SSD<\/strong> in a protective case to log your footage when traveling.\u00a0 Not only will the read\/write speeds be faster than an external HDD, but you\u2019ll also have the added benefit of a more rugged hard drive.<\/p>\n

2. Define a Narrative and Tone<\/h3>\n

While you may not have the luxury of a script when editing a travel film<\/strong>, your video should nonetheless tell a story in some way. Even if the story is very basic, it’s much better to use basic storytelling techniques in your video. For example, it probably makes more sense to start out with establishing shots<\/strong> to give your viewers context rather than\u00a0throwing all of your b-roll together.<\/p>\n
