American thinker and writer Joseph Campbell<\/a> spent considerable time exploring the facets of myth and religion. But he is perhaps best known for two concepts that have permeated modern culture. The first is the idea that you should “follow your bliss.” You’ve surely seen the phrase written on chalkboards in coffeeshops.\u00a0In an interview with journalist Bill Moyers<\/a>, Campbell (referring to\u00a0Sinclair Lewis’s<\/a> satiric novel, Babbitt<\/a>)<\/em>\u00a0asks:<\/p>\n

Remember the last line? ‘I have never done a thing that I wanted to do in all my life.’ That is a man who never followed his bliss.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The second of Campbell’s most influential concepts, first presented in his novel The Hero with a Thousand Faces<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0is that of the\u00a0monomyth<\/strong>. More simply put, the monomyth<\/strong> is the literary and philosophical theory of\u00a0the hero’s journey.<\/strong>\u00a0If you are a fan of film, you are already intimately familiar with it. In Campbell’s own words, the hero’s journey<\/strong> is a tale in which:<\/p>\n

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You’ll find plenty of monomyth<\/strong> tropes in the art and religion of every culture\u00a0throughout history. Campbell didn’t really invent the idea. He identified it. And then Hollywood ran with it, creating and adapting content based on the template. During his tenure as an executive at Disney,\u00a0Christopher Vogler<\/a> circulated a studio memo that outlined the hero’s journey<\/strong> in twelve steps. Those steps are bolded in the summary quote below:<\/p>\n

The hero\u2019s journey, once more:\u00a0 The hero is introduced in his ORDINARY WORLD<\/strong> where he receives the CALL TO ADVENTURE<\/strong>.\u00a0 He is RELUCTANT<\/strong> at first to CROSS THE FIRST THRESHOLD<\/strong> where he eventually encounters TESTS, ALLIES and ENEMIES<\/strong>.\u00a0 He reaches the INNERMOST CAVE<\/strong> where he endures the SUPREME ORDEAL<\/strong>.\u00a0 He SEIZES THE SWORD<\/strong> or the treasure and is pursued on the ROAD BACK<\/strong> to his world.\u00a0 He is RESURRECTED<\/strong> and transformed by his experience.\u00a0 He RETURNS<\/strong> to his ordinary world with a treasure, boon, or ELIXIR<\/strong> to benefit his world.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It came to me that there really was no modern use of mythology, so that’s when I started doing more strenuous research on fairy tales, folklore and mythology, and I started reading Joe’s books. Before that I hadn’t read any of Joe’s books…. It was very eerie because in reading\u00a0<\/span>The Hero with A Thousand Faces<\/i>\u00a0I began to realize that my first draft of \u00a0<\/i>Star Wars\u00a0<\/span>was following classical motifs.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lucas isn’t the only storyteller influenced by Campbell. Neo’s journey<\/a> in The Matrix<\/a><\/em> is obviously\u00a0driven by Campbell’s theory. O Brother, Where Art Thou?<\/a><\/em> is a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey<\/em><\/a>, which is about as monomythical as it gets. The list goes on and on.<\/a><\/p>\n
