As a video editor or Digital Imaging Technician<\/a>, you will often need to share files with others. Eventually you will find out that you may not be working on the same operating system (OS) as others. If you work solely on a Mac, but need to send files to someone working on a PC, your external hard drive needs to be set up for both operating systems. Let’s take a look at the different types of formats, and which are best for video production.<\/p>\n

Formatting the Hard Drive<\/h3>\n

A vast majority\u00a0of\u00a0video production\u00a0will be done on a Mac or Windows operating system<\/strong>, so we aren’t going to cover Linux. Hard drives set up for use on Windows machines only will often use\u00a0NTFS<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, while Macs will use\u00a0HFS+<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. That said, if you are using both a PC and Mac in the workflow, you’ll need to use a different format.<\/p>\n

You may be using only Macs or PCs in your own office, but you will also need to take into account what type of machines your client is using. If you need to send them RAW files or an edited sequence, you will need to make sure the external hard drive is set up for both operating systems. To do this, you will need to use either exFAT<\/strong><\/em><\/a> or FAT32<\/strong><\/em><\/a> formats. This will allow you to use the hard drive on both a Mac and PC.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

FAT32 is often used among general users, but FAT32\u00a0has limitations that can affect filmmakers<\/strong>. FAT32 has a\u00a0maximum file size of 4 GB per file. The limitation affects both Mac and PC users. A single high resolution file can easily go over 4 GB, so Fat32\u00a0may not the best format.\u00a0The best format for video production is exFAT<\/strong>. The maximum individual file size for exFAT is 16 EB. 1 EB, or exabyte, is 1 billion GB. That said, if you are using smaller file sizes \u2014 FAT32 can suffice.<\/p>\n

Format Hard Drive (Mac)<\/h3>\n

1. Connect the external hard drive to the computer.<\/p>\n

2. Click\u00a0Go\u00a0<\/em>on the top tool bar, and select\u00a0Utilities<\/em>.<\/p>\n

3. Open\u00a0Disk Utility<\/em>.<\/p>\n

4. Select the external hard drive on the left-hand side.<\/p>\n

5. Click the\u00a0Partition<\/em>\u00a0tab.<\/p>\n

6. Change the\u00a0Partition Layout\u00a0from Current<\/em> to 1 Partition<\/em>.<\/p>\n

7. Click\u00a0Options,\u00a0<\/em>Select\u00a0Master Boot Record<\/em>, and click\u00a0OK<\/em>.<\/p>\n

8. Name the hard drive with a name of your choice.<\/p>\n

9. Click the\u00a0Format\u00a0drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

10. Select exFat<\/em>\u00a0(or\u00a0MS-DOS FAT<\/em> for a FAT32 format).<\/p>\n

11. Hit\u00a0Apply, <\/em>then click on\u00a0Partition.<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Select Disk Management.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Right-Click on the external hard drive in the Volume<\/em> tab.<\/p>\n

4. Click Format.<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Name the hard drive.<\/p>\n

6. Select exFAT<\/em> (or FAT<\/em> for FAT32).<\/p>\n

7. Click OK.<\/em><\/p>\n

Naming and Labelling Hard Drives<\/h3>\n

If you will be using multiple external hard drives on a project, you’ll want to make sure to keep them organized. This includes the way you name the drive and how you label it.<\/p>\n

One of my personal tricks is naming all drives after an actor. For instance,\u00a0one project had several external drives, all of which were named after different Will Ferrell<\/a> characters \u2014 Mugatu, Megamind, Lord Business, and Ron Burgundy. Another project used Tom Hanks<\/a> characters \u2014 Forrest\u00a0and Woody.<\/p>\n

Remember that external drives should be used temporarily \u2014 and all footage should be backed up elsewhere. Use checksum verification<\/a> to make sure everything is copied correctly.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

There are plenty of ways you can label your drives. You can simply use some masking tape or gaff tape, and then write the name of the drive. You can also use hard drive labels<\/a>, which\u00a0are the awesome stickers featured above. \u00a0You easily put them on your external drive to keep track of them.<\/p>\n

If you are a parent, like myself, you can also use any stickers you have lying around the house. I recently had Kermit the Frog and Optimus Prime hard drives.<\/p>\n

No matter how you label your hard drives, just make sure you keep track of them. You never know when you will need that footage from a three-year-old project.<\/p>\n
