I wanted to know more about the production behind the video, so I reached out to Lindsay with a few questions.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"can-you-tell-us-a-little-bit-about-yourself\" style=\"color: #222222;\">Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve been editing as a hobby since middle school, but only really started trying to improve this past year after I <strong>switched from Final Cut Pro X to Adobe CC<\/strong> so I could start editing seamlessly alongside After Effects.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-did-this-project-take\" style=\"color: #222222;\">How long did this project take?<\/h3>\n<p>I started in December and worked on it until the day I uploaded it \u2014\u00a0<em>July 23<\/em>. Some time periods were more productive than others, there were entire months and weeks where I didn\u2019t work on it at all.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-was-your-inspiration-to-put-this-together\" style=\"color: #222222;\">What was your inspiration to put this together?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>I wanted to learn After Effects<\/strong> and decided something like this would be the best way to familiarize myself with it.<\/p>\n<p>As far as inspiration from other works, I drew a lot from AMVs (Anime Music Videos) which has a community of a lot of really talented editors. I put all the scenes with similar elements (thematic, color, similar kinetics) together into Sorting. Then I pulled clips I knew I wanted (trying to keep a segment of the song in mind) into Assembly and converted them to AE compositions via <strong>Dynamic<\/strong> <strong>Link<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"How To Rotoscope in After Effects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketstock.com\/blog\/how-to-rotoscope-in-after-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">AE, I rotoscoped<\/a>\u00a0or applied motion using the Camera tool, etc. Then back in Premiere <strong>I would just play around with clips until something clicked<\/strong>. Once I had a sequence I liked I put it into <strong>Final,<\/strong> which had the audio track.<\/p>\n<p>About halfway through I was familiar enough with the footage that I could recall a scene I wanted to go with another, which was a huge time saver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"did-you-primarily-rely-on-rotoscoping-in-ae-or-do-you-use-any-masking-or-your-own-technique\" style=\"color: #222222;\">Did you primarily rely on\u00a0rotoscoping in AE, or do you use any masking or your own technique?<\/h3>\n<p>I would say it was about 90% manual rotoscoping frame by frame, 8% using the rotobrush if the background or foreground were delineated enough, and 2% chromakeying \u2014 which felt like winning the lottery.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"were-there-certain-clips-you-always-had-in-mind-or-did-you-sit-down-and-watch-all-the-movies-and-take-notes-was-there-a-plan-or-were-things-more-random\">Were there certain clips you always had in mind, or did you sit down and watch all the movies and take notes? Was there a plan, or were things more random?<\/h3>\n<p>No plan whatsoever; most of the time I felt like I was just bashing my head against the keyboard until I accidentally did something I liked. Any tips or tricks fellow editors can use?<\/h3>\n<p>I didn\u2019t run into too many technical problems since I used pretty simple techniques. Most problems were conceptual and solved after messing around for a while until something clicked.<\/p>\n<p>The best tip I could give is to work really hard on an idea until you get frustrated, then <strong>walk away from the project and come back after your subconscious digests what you\u2019re trying to do<\/strong>. Half the time I could finish an idea fairly quickly after coming back to it with a fresh perspective.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"where-do-you-go-for-inspiration-or-to-read-up-on-technical-help\" style=\"color: #222222;\">Where do you go for inspiration or to read up on technical help?<\/h3>\n<p>Mostly AMVs, since they were so similar to what I was trying to do. But also <a title=\"Leonardo Dalessandri\u2019s Vimeo channel\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/leonardodalessandri\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Leonardo Dalessandri\u2019s Vimeo channel<\/a> which has some amazing travel videos. Although sometimes this was counterproductive and the extent of their talent just discouraged me. That\u2019s when you try and find bad videos made by kids to make yourself feel better. I\u2019m pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>For technical help my gold standard was <a title=\"Andrew Devis\" href=\"http:\/\/tale2tell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Andrew Devis<\/a>. The guy knows every NLE\/Compositing Application intimately and is a genius at explaining the underlying reasons for everything that\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Disney-Mashup-McCutcheon-Edit.gif\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-79194 size-full\" title=\"Interview: The Brilliant Mashup Editor Behind 'Fan.tasia' \" src=\"https:\/\/pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Disney-Mashup-McCutcheon-Edit.gif\" alt=\"Interview: The Brilliant Mashup Editor Behind 'Fan.tasia' \" width=\"755\" height=\"423\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Gif\u00a0via Lindsay McCutcheon \u2014 Fan.tasia\/<a title=\"Disney\" href=\"http:\/\/www.disney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Disney<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"any-advice-to-fellow-editors\" style=\"color: #222222;\">Any advice to fellow editors?<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to abandon an idea you\u2019ve spent a lot of time on just because of the potential waste of time.<\/p>\n<p>It was difficult knowing that after spending hours cutting up a two second clip, there was a strong chance that I wouldn\u2019t even end up using it for whatever reason, but if I forced it to fit, the video would have suffered.<\/p>\n<p>For me it was also important to be in a positive state of mind while I was working, I think if you\u2019re having fun with the project it will show in the finished product.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"whats-next-for-you\" style=\"color: #222222;\">What&#8217;s next for you?<\/h3>\n<p>I was working on a video for <a title=\"Studio Ghibli\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ghibli.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Studio Ghibli<\/a> films, which I put on the back burner while I worked on <em>Fan.tasia<\/em>, so I\u2019ll finish up that one soon.
