It was such a breakthrough, we included it in an article titled Six Technologies Poised to Change the Future of Film.

Dubbed Visually Indicated Sounds, the researchers created an algorithm that could accurately predict the sound of one object hitting another.

From the MIT video below, “[S]ounds can tell us how objects behave when we physically interact with them. Then can convey whether and object is hard or soft, smooth or rough, and rigid or deformable.”

For the study, researchers recorded themselves using a drumstick to hit various objects like walkways, bookshelves, glass, and bushes. They then loaded a series of predictive sounds into a computer. When a silent film of a person hitting an object with a drumstick appears on screen, the algorithm creates the appropriate sound effect to match the action.

In this paper, we propose the task of predicting what sound an object makes when struck as a way of studying physical interactions within a visual scene. We present an algorithm that synthesizes sound from silent videos of people hitting and scratching objects with a drumstick. This algorithm uses a recurrent neural network to predict sound features from videos and then produces a waveform from these features with an example-based synthesis procedure. We show that the sounds predicted by our model are realistic enough to fool participants in a “real or fake” psychophysical experiment, and that they convey significant information about material properties and physical interactions.

Here’s a look at the algorithm in action.
