It’s crazy to think that the compact camera<\/strong> you keep in your backpack\u00a0to take pictures of your dog at the park might also be the camera responsible for capturing stunt footage<\/strong> in the latest billion-dollar grossing blockbuster<\/a>. It’s crazy, yes. But, it’s also true,<\/strong> thanks to the ever-increasing speed of industry innovation.<\/p>\n

So, what steps should you take when something worth including in your next project suddenly<\/strong> appears during your day-to-day adventures? Obviously, you quickly grab the camera<\/strong> from your backpack, but you have zero of support gear<\/strong> \u00a0\u2014 no lights, no mics, etc. \u2014 so what next?<\/p>\n

The following steps can help you obtain good clips in an impromptu setting<\/strong>. Of course, this will not be a one-stop shop for all improvised settings \u2014 these steps will work best for establishing<\/strong> shots.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Dial in Your Camera Settings<\/h3>\n

I took the video above during a recent hike. The scenery was perfect<\/strong> for a project I was working, but, unfortunately, I only had my camera. No tripod in sight.<\/strong> Not only that, I was on an uneven surface<\/strong> with a slight wind<\/strong> blowing me off balance. Not the best situation<\/strong> to start with. As you can see, there’s a bit of camera shake,<\/strong> and it looks quite unprofessional.<\/p>\n

Before hitting record, I increased the resolution<\/strong> from 1080p<\/strong> to 4k.<\/strong> Even though the rest of my project was being delivered in 1080p,<\/strong> it was crucial to capture this spontaneous shot in the highest resolution possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This approach will help greatly in post when it comes time to stabilize<\/strong> the footage. Additionally, this approach adds some wiggle room should you decide to include a pan<\/strong> or tilt.<\/strong>\u00a0Lastly, take note \u2014 if you know there might be a chance of cropping<\/strong> your image, it’s always best to move back<\/strong> a little before you hit record.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Stabilize as Much as Possible<\/h3>\n

You could say that two of the core principles<\/strong> of a professional shot<\/strong> are\u00a0stability<\/strong> and movement.<\/strong>\u00a0A stable shot is going to look better than a clip that’s shaking<\/strong> too much. A moving shot, for the most part, will look better (or at least add more character) than a stable shot.<\/p>\n

It’s important to note that there’s a difference<\/strong> between camera shake<\/strong> and handheld cinematography.\u00a0<\/strong>When you hold a camera with just your hands, every step, vibration,<\/strong> and movement<\/strong> is transferred directly to the camera itself. The lighter the camera, the more kinetic energy<\/strong> will be visible within the footage. There’s no absorption to counterbalance the movement.<\/p>\n

With larger cameras <\/strong>(or with cameras on a shoulder rig) you have several more points of connection<\/strong> with your body, and the energy of the movement is dispersed more evenly.<\/p>\n

Because you’ll be running your footage through a stabilizer in post-production,<\/strong> your shot needs to be as stable as possible.\u00a0<\/strong>Leave pans<\/strong> and tilts<\/strong> for post, too, as those kinds of shots are almost impossible to pull off handheld.<\/p>\n

I would suggest resting your camera on your camera bag<\/strong> or the flattest surface possible. If you haven’t already, it’s always worth acquiring a camera beanbag<\/a>. They fit in the average rucksack and are perfect<\/em> for situations like this.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Make Post-Production Tweaks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

As discussed above, this kind of impromptu footage<\/strong> benefits greatly from stabilization.<\/strong> If you’re working with After Effects,<\/strong> here<\/a> is an excellent guide offering several ways to do just that.<\/p>\n

When your shot is fixed, you need to change the composition size from 4k<\/strong> to 1080p,<\/strong> and scale down your footage (as you can see in the image above). Leave some over-trim on the side or top if you want to include a pan or tilt.<\/p>\n

To increase<\/strong> or decrease<\/strong> the scale of a shot<\/strong>\/media file within After Effects,<\/strong> select a layer<\/strong> within your timeline<\/strong> and hit S<\/strong> on the keyboard. With the shot scaled down and selected, hit P<\/strong> on your keyboard to bring up the position control,<\/strong> and click the stopwatch<\/strong> to activate<\/strong> a key frame<\/strong>. Move your timeline cursor<\/strong> near the end of the clip, and then move the position<\/strong> of the shot according to if you are creating a pan<\/strong> or tilt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To make the movement look more legit, change the end keyframe<\/strong> to an Easy Ease<\/strong> by selecting the keyframe<\/strong> and pressing F9<\/strong>. This will slow the movement down toward the end<\/strong>, instead of abruptly coming to a stop.<\/p>\n

Finally, apply your color correction<\/strong> to match the sequence<\/strong> within your project, and you are good to go. Here’s the before and after:<\/p>\n

As you can see, the shot has been transformed<\/strong> from something filmed spontaneously<\/strong> with no support gear<\/strong> into something that looks like it was shot on a tripod.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your DSLR doesn’t support 4k<\/strong> or a higher resolution than 1080p,<\/strong> you can still achieve the same effect by using a 1080p letterbox<\/strong> rather than scaling the footage down.<\/p>\n

So, to recap, take these steps to make impromptu footage look like it was planned all along:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Film in the highest resolution<\/strong> possible.<\/li>\n
  2. Find your framing, then step<\/strong>\u00a0back<\/strong> a few paces.<\/li>\n
  3. Stabilize the camera<\/strong> as much as possible before recording.<\/li>\n
  4. Stabilize the footage<\/strong> in post-production.<\/li>\n
  5. Convert the composition to a smaller resolution.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  6. Downscale<\/strong> the footage.<\/li>\n
  7. Add a position keyframe,<\/strong> and then move the shot up, down, left or right.<\/li>\n
  8. Apply your color grade.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  9. Celebrate<\/strong> a job well done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
