One of the most frustrating aspects\u00a0of video editing<\/strong> is noticing a mistake (or finding something specific you want to examine) in the middle of your timeline. Controlling playback dynamically<\/strong> as you cut is a great skill set to add to\u00a0your Premiere Pro<\/a> arsenal.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Play Around<\/h3>\n

First you want to hit the Play Around<\/strong> option (or Shift+K)<\/strong>. This takes you back a few seconds.<\/p>\n

To change that number of seconds, choose\u00a0Premiere Pro CC\u00a0<\/strong>>\u00a0Preferences\u00a0<\/strong>>\u00a0Playback<\/strong>. If you’re working on a PC:\u00a0Edit > Preferences > Playback<\/strong>\u00a0and then edit the amount of time under PreRoll<\/strong> and PostRoll<\/strong>. Just remember \u2014\u00a0Shift+K<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 2: Looping<\/h3>\n

After you’ve figured out what Play Around<\/strong> does, you can loop this action by going to the Wrench Tool<\/strong> on the program monitor and picking Loop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hitting\u00a0Shift+K <\/strong>now will take you back a few seconds, play through to a couple of seconds after, and then loop back around and play it again. This saves you from having to manually go back to where you want to begin your edit.<\/p>\n

First, hit the shortcut T <\/strong>to highlight the cut you want to play with, then hit Option+Left Arrow<\/strong>\u00a0or Option+Right Arrow.<\/strong> If you’re working on a PC,\u00a0Alt+Right Arrow<\/strong> or Alt+Left Arrow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
