On my recent trip to Adobe Video World<\/strong>, I attended a session on how to properly record voice-overs and narration <\/strong>put on by\u00a0Cheryl Ottenritter<\/strong> from Ott House Audio<\/a>. Though some of the information was obvious, I found several hints and tips to be pretty interesting and clever. Whether you\u2019re working on corporate video<\/strong>, a\u00a0documentary<\/strong>, or your own feature<\/strong>, at some point you may need to\u00a0step in front of the mic<\/strong> or direct somebody to do so<\/strong>. Recording voice over work and narration might seem like a dull or simple\u00a0task, but there are intricate details to remember<\/strong> in order to efficiently get quality audio<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choosing the Right Mic<\/h3>\n

The first step in your journey is finding the right microphone for your recording. There are many different kinds of mics available<\/strong>, all with varying capabilities. Before you spend an unnecessary amount of cash on a mic you only end up using a handful of times, consider the bulk of work<\/strong> you’ll be doing. Is the majority of your work in a studio or out in the field?<\/strong>\u00a0Answering this question should help you find the right mic.<\/p>\n

For strictly studio-based recording<\/strong>, a lot of pros go with the\u00a0Neumann TLM 103<\/a>\u00a0with a Popper Stopper<\/a>.\u00a0An excellent option for studio and field-based recording<\/strong> is the Sennheiser MKH 416<\/a>, essentially the industry standard.\u00a0This hypercardioid microphone<\/a> picks up great quality sound when pointed at your subject.\u00a0With a $1000 price tag<\/strong>, this mic isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for<\/strong>. Though this is a boom mic<\/strong>, it still works great for voice-overs and can be used in the field as well. So, you know, win\/win. This is also a great mic for inexperienced talent<\/strong> to work with. If you’re looking for a less expensive option, the\u00a0Sennheiser MKE 600 <\/a>is an excellent choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n
