In\u00a0this tutorial, I\u2019ll\u00a0give you a brief introduction into the world of blend modes.<\/p>\n<p>To accomplish this I will focus on a simple task \u2014 <strong>adjusting<\/strong> <strong>exposure<\/strong>. First, I\u00a0will <strong>darken<\/strong> an overexposed image\u00a0and then <strong>brighten<\/strong>\u00a0an underexposed image. Finally, I\u2019ll show you how to adjust the exposure of <strong>isolated<\/strong> areas of your footage. When I use a blend mode, I am essentially creating a composite<strong> \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0an image created from two or more source images. I\u00a0can create a very basic composite by simply <strong>lowering the opacity<\/strong> of a layer with an underlying layer. Blend modes\u00a0offer a more complex method\u00a0of creating a composite.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, when I\u00a0select a layer, I\u00a0can find all of the various blend modes in the <strong>Effect Controls<\/strong> panel under <strong>Opacity<\/strong>. The modes fall into <strong>six different<\/strong> <strong>categories<\/strong>. These categories aren\u2019t clearly labeled; they are simply separated by lines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Normal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Subtractive<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Additive<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Complex<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Difference<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>HSL (Hue, Saturation, Color, and Luminosity)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because this is an introduction to blend modes, I\u2019ll be using only\u00a0<strong>subtractive<\/strong> and <strong>additive<\/strong> modes.\u00a0First, we will <strong>darken<\/strong> an overexposed image\u00a0and then <strong>brighten<\/strong>\u00a0an underexposed image.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"darken\">Darken<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-88605 size-full\" title=\"Adjusting Exposure with Blend Modes in Premiere Pro \u2014 Darken\" src=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Adjusting-Exposure-with-Blend-Modes-Darken.gif\" alt=\"Adjusting Exposure with Blend Modes in Premiere Pro \u2014 Darken\" width=\"755\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First, I\u2019ll make adjustments to an overexposed clip. If I look at the waveform monitor in my <strong>Lumetri<\/strong> <strong>scopes panel<\/strong>, I can see that my video levels are pretty high. I want to bring the exposure down to improve my image. To use the blend modes, I need to <strong>duplicate the clip<\/strong> and <strong>overlay<\/strong> <strong>the copy<\/strong> over the original layer. With two layers, I can now change the blend mode of my top layer, resulting in\u00a0a\u00a0composite of the two images.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>subtractive<\/strong> <strong>category<\/strong> offers up several modes that will darken your clip. After testing out a few, I\u2019ve found that the\u00a0<strong>multiply<\/strong> <strong>mode<\/strong> gives me the best result. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/support.html#\/top_products\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Adobe\u2019s support page<\/a>,\u00a0multiply\u00a0\u201csimulates drawing with multiple marking pens on paper or placing multiple gels in front of a light.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"brighten\">Brighten<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-88606 size-full\" title=\"Adjusting Exposure with Blend Modes in Premiere Pro \u2014 Brighten\" src=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Adjusting-Exposure-with-Blend-Modes-Brighten.gif\" alt=\"Adjusting Exposure with Blend Modes in Premiere Pro \u2014 Brighten\" width=\"755\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, I\u2019ll fix an underexposed clip. These additive blend modes simulate the method of mixing projected light. You\u2019ll find that many of the modes in the additive category are the opposite of subtractive. For this example, I\u2019m going to decrease\u00a0the brightness of the background of an interview. To do this, I\u2019ll use the <strong>crop<\/strong> <strong>tool<\/strong> so I can quickly <strong>isolate<\/strong> <strong>my subject<\/strong> from the background. This will allow me to focus on the area that I would like to adjust.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I can switch my top layer to <strong>multiply<\/strong>, darkening the background. I can also fine-tune the adjustment by <strong>feathering the crop mask<\/strong>. Furthermore, lowering the opacity of the top layer allows me to control the brightness of the background. If 100% is too dark, I can lower the opacity to brighten things up.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When it comes to working with <strong>blend modes,<\/strong> this tutorial is only the tip of the iceberg.
