Linkedin<\/a>, to many, is perhaps the most useful yet least fun of the major social media networks<\/strong>. It\u2019s useful because it can be a great resource to make connections, grow\u00a0a professional network, and find new work opportunities<\/strong>. However, it can also be intimidating and not as user-friendly<\/strong> as Facebook or Twitter.<\/p>\n

However, if you\u2019re looking to maximize your social footprint and expand\u00a0your personal brand for\u00a0more and better opportunities<\/strong>, here are five useful tips<\/strong> to help you build out your Linkedin profile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1. Show Your Work<\/b><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re a video professional<\/strong> (cinematographer, motion designer, or anything in between), it\u2019s important to show off your work early and often<\/strong>. Linkedin, via recent updates, now offers\u00a0several ways to do this.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d recommend you feature\u00a0a link to your professional portfolio page<\/strong> (whether it’s\u00a0a sizzle reel on Vimeo or an entire webpage showcasing\u00a0your work). While this still gets obscured by the \u201cshow more\u201d in a\u00a0browser and the Linkedin App, it will still\u00a0appear\u00a0with your personal information<\/strong>\u00a0(see above).<\/p>\n

You can also now include links (or even uploads) of work samples<\/strong> under your jobs in the Experience section<\/strong>. These will show up with quality thumbnails<\/strong> (and an option to click through if it’s a link). I would highly recommend featuring\u00a0samples throughout your Experience<\/strong> (more on why below).<\/p>\n

2. Highlight Your Experience<\/b><\/h3>\n

As with links and samples<\/strong>, your Experience section will be one of the first place employers or clients will look<\/strong>. Be sure to explain your role and job duties<\/strong> for each entry.<\/p>\n

Pro-Tip for Freelancers<\/strong>: If you freelance full or part time, you can create a Freelance Experience entry that includes up-to-date samples of your most recent freelance work with instructions on how to contact you.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Get (and Give) References<\/b><\/h3>\n

References are another great way to validate your skills and expertise<\/strong>. In the Linkedin community, it\u2019s common practice for people to exchange references<\/strong>. That is, if you want one from a colleague, you might want to offer writing one for them\u00a0first in exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another trick I recommend is to write out references for others to submit<\/strong> (people do this with resumes all the time). It\u2019s acceptable to write out a reference detailing your skills and achievements<\/strong>, then send it to your colleague and ask them to review, change, or touch it up \u2014 and submit it on your profile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. Be Upfront About Your Ideal Projects\/Jobs<\/b><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re investing time and resources into your Linkedin profile<\/strong>, it\u2019s probably because you\u2019re looking for something<\/strong>. Whether that\u2019s a new employment opportunity, more freelance work, or a better professional network<\/strong>, it\u2019s important to take inventory of your intentions.<\/p>\n

If you know exactly what you\u2019d like to accomplish, there\u2019s no reason you shouldn\u2019t put that on your profile to let people know<\/strong>. Linkedin\u00a0connects employers with employees;<\/strong>\u00a0if you feed it what you\u2019re looking for, it will work for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Don\u2019t Bury Contact Info<\/b><\/h3>\n

Not everyone checks Linkedin every day<\/strong>, which is fine. There are a million other things you can do with your time, but as such, getting a message\u00a0through the website or your app may mean\u00a0a longer delay<\/strong>\u00a0in contact than an\u00a0email or a call. You can and should put your preferred contact info on your profile<\/strong>, preferably in your first summary section with suggested instructions on how to best contact you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
