About Film Music
What is film music?
Film music is music that is used in a film in order to amplify the action or create an atmosphere. This music can guide the audience through the film, deepening their understanding of a character’s internal state, crucial plot turns, and more. It can wordlessly comment on the film’s action, establish a certain pacing, and ultimately, has the power to become just as iconic as the film itself. Film music can involve an immense array of musical genres; essentially, any genre can be used in a film, from blues to pop and everything in between.
The terms “film score” and “film soundtrack” are often used interchangeably but a slight distinction exists between them. A film score involves an original piece of music that is written with a specific film in mind. The film director works with the composer to create a score that will enhance the story and emotional impact of the film. The film soundtrack, on the other hand, may contain musical tracks that existed well before the film was made and were not created for the film in which they are featured.
When did film music start?
Film music started in the days of silent cinema. For these films, music was played behind the screen in each theater, often as a live piano accompaniment and sometimes on gramophone records. The pianists were given cue sheets to follow, although they could also improvise a bit. In 1929, when it became possible to synchronize music to celluloid, film music took on an even more important role in the storytelling process. Hollywood began to commission composers to create new material for films.
From the 1930s through the 1950s, the field of film music really took off. At this time, many film composers held backgrounds in concert music and so tended to exclusively write orchestral music. Some of the most famous composers of this era include Max Steiner, largely regarded as “The Father of Film Music,” Enrich Korngold, who heavily influenced composer John Williams’ musical work on Star Wars in 1977, and Alfred Newman, who composed over 250 films and fathered film composers Thomas Newman and David Newman, and singer-songwriter Randy Newman.
In the 1950s, film music began to expand into new genres. Alex North, composer for A Streetcar Named Desire, introduced a hybrid symphonic-jazz film score that moved Hollywood away from what had previously been its exclusively European sound. In 1958, Miles Davis contributed to the film score for French. Noir film Elevator to the Gallows, making him one of the earliest African-American film composers. He helped set the stage for later artists like Quincy Jones and Terence Blanchard. In 1967, The Graduate changed the game by almost entirely licensing songs that had nothing to do with the film itself. The 1970s saw the addition of synthesizers to film scores while the ‘80s involved many original songs such as “Ghostbusters.” Thanks to this rich history, today’s cinematic scores encompass a wide range of genres and musical styles.
What does film music convey?
When used effectively, music in film can establish a setting, create an atmosphere, enhance the mood, reinforce or foreshadow key developments in the narrative, and more. Imagine being introduced to the Shire from The Lord of the Rings without the song “Concerning Hobbits,” or the shark from Jaws without its blood-quickening theme. These essential film moments simply would not have had the same impact on viewers if not for the accompanying soundtrack. Film music can also create or stir up powerful emotions in audience members. It can incite tears, laughter, anger, and more. Studies have shown that happy, upbeat music causes the brain to produce dopamine and serotonin, chemicals that evoke joy, while more slow-paced and calm music can reduce stress by relaxing the mind and body. Filmmakers can use this information to their advantage by using upbeat tracks in happy scenes and slow-paced tracks in relaxed, atmospheric scenes.
How to find good film music? Why is royalty-free a good option?
To find good film music, you will want to keep an eye (and ear) out for music sites that feature tracks by professional musicians. Ideally, the music libraries will include music in a wide range of genres and moods so that you can easily find tracks to match your video project. Using royalty-free music for film is also an excellent option.
While copyrighted music requires users to pay royalties, which are ongoing fees, to the copyright owner or original creator, royalty-free music involves only a one-time, initial payment to obtain the license. Regardless of the type of music one uses, getting that license is essential. Sharing videos to platforms such as YouTube without first obtaining permission can result in the video getting taken down or even a copyright infringement case. To avoid this headache, people can use royalty-free music in their creative projects and put to rest any worries of copyright concerns. At PremiumBeat, all of our music is royalty-free, exclusively available, and completely copyright clear. The tracks you find here are safe for YouTube, Vimeo, and other streaming platforms.
