The Wait is Over! Metabones Releases Micro Four Thirds to EF Speedbooster

Caleb Ward
Published: Last Updated:

Metabones latest Speedbooster opens a world of possibilities for those with Canon lenses.

At the beginning of the digital filmmaking craze, shooting with a DSLR was a no brainer, especially if you used a camera like a Canon Mark ii. DSLRs offered incredible dynamic range, shallow depth of field, and amazing interchangeable lenses…a major leap in camera technology. But with more cameras hitting the market there are many non-DSLR options out there for the indie-filmmaker.

The Blackmagic 2.5K cinema camera and the mirrorless Panasonic GH4 are attracting a significant filmmaker user base. Both of these cameras offer high-resolution,  incredible dynamic range, and the ability to shoot RAW footage. But if you were one of the early adopters of DSLRs for filmmaking you probably have a collection of Canon EF lenses that don’t fit the Micro Four Third lens mount on these Blackmagic and Panasonic cameras. So your options have been limited…until now.

Metabones, the popular speedbooster and adapter company, have created a Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Speedbooster that allows users to attach Canon lenses to any cameras that have a Micro Four Thirds mount. This comes a few months after the release of the Canon EF to MFT mount that was created exclusively for the Blackmagic Pocket Camera. We can’t wait to try out this new product.

EF to MFT Speedbooster Specs

Speedboosting Power 1 Stop
Focal Reduction 0.71x
Image Stabilization Yes

The adapter will work with most Canon Lenses with the exception of Canon EF-S lenses (some non-Canon lenses may be incompatible with the Speedbooster). To get a full list, check out the Speedbooster’s spec page on the Metabones website.

Pricing and Availability

Currently Metabones’ EF to MFT Speedbooster is retailing for $599. You can also get a Canon EF to MFT adapter-only for $399.  There is currently no word on when both adapters will be available, but we anticipate it will be soon.
