Though well over 150 years old, “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear” is a relative newcomer to the canon of classic Christmas carols. The words were written by Edmund Sears, a Unitarian minister from Massachusetts. Originally, it was written as a poem and published in The Christian Register, a Boston newspaper of the day, in December of 1849. Incidentally, it was less than a year later, in 1850, that Richard Storrs Willis—a protégé of Felix Mendelssohn—wrote the music that would later be joined with Sears’ poem to become the composition we know today.
